A Ton of Refrigeration
Capacity can be defined by comparison to the cooling effect of ice. Since ice requires 144 BTU/lb to change state to a fluid, it requires 2000 times that amount to define a TON OF REFRIGERATION.
- Per day, 2000 x 144 = 288,000 BTU
- Per hour, 288,000 / 24 = 12,000 BTU
- Most units are rated in Tons per Hour
- For example, a 3-Ton unit can cause cooling of 3 * 12,000 = 36,000 BTUs per hour
