Enthalpy

Enthalpy is the amount of heat energy in a substance, determined by

• Mass
• Temperature
• Pressure
• Properties of that substance

A refrigerant's enthalpy rises

• In the compressor, where both temperature and pressure increase
• In the evaporator, as the refrigerant absorbs heat from the conditioned space

Enthalpy falls in the condenser as the refrigerant loses heat to the condensing medium
